New Ocean Reanalysis Products for the Arctic: Modeling Collaboration Team June 2022 Meeting [Video]

Ocean and sea-ice reanalyses (ORAs) combine dynamical ocean models, atmospheric surface forcing fields, and observations to provide a reconstructed historical, four-dimensional description of the ocean state. ORAs are used for climate diagnostic studies, climate monitoring, as verification for climate model simulations, and as initial conditions for sub-seasonal to decadal predictions. The Arctic Ocean represents a relatively small fraction of the global ocean area, but it is of considerable research interest due to ongoing rapid climate changes with potential influences at larger scales. Significant physical processes are also present in the Arctic Ocean which influence the overturning oceanic circulation and affect the meridional surface temperature gradient. In this meeting, the Modeling team discussed two current efforts in ocean reanalyses for the Arctic. James Carton (University of Maryland) presented the new Regional Arctic Ocean/sea ice Reanalysis (RARE). An Nguyen (University of Texas Austin) presented on the Arctic Subpolar gyre sTate Estimate (ASTE), a data-constrained, dynamically consistent ocean-sea ice model-data synthesis.Want to join future IARPC meetings or webinars?
