After enduring more than a decade of horrific abuse and captivity, Jennifer Turpin and her 12 siblings had just watched California sheriff’s deputies take their parents away in handcuffs. The frail and malnourished Turpin children were now in a hospital, where they received food, clean clothes, medical treatment, kindness from strangers — things the siblings rarely, or in some cases never, had before. Looking around her hospital room that January morning, Jennifer Turpin realized for the first time they were finally free, and she danced.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald Heard talks about the Coast Guards involvement in the 2015 Bayou Classic, an annual football game between Grambling State University and Southern University held the week of Thanksgiving in New Orleans.The Coast Guard was a sponsor of the 2015 Bayou Classic football game and series of fan events, such as the College & Career Fair and Fan Fest. Coast Guard members from Coast Guard District Eight interacted with the community during several of the fan events and brought attention to the Coast Guards College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative, the only scholarship offered by the Coast Guard.
