Having produced over 100% of its electrical needs from renewables for nearly the last decade Orkney is a pioneer in decarbonising. How has a small archipelago of around 22,000 people found itself at the vanguard of the planet’s attempts to wean itself of fossil fuels?In addition Orkney now also finds itself in the centre of the recent Scotwind offshore wind leasing round, which will see 25 GW of wind installed in the waters across the top of mainland Scotland. Questions are being asked about whether this harvested energy will be put into the electrical grid or turned into other more portable fuels.
